"Empire Dress" Custom-made historical dress
Model presented: Empire dress circa 1810
A bit of history:
The so-called Empire style dress was a garment in fashion between 1795 and 1820.
She is embodied by Joséphine de Beauharnais who was very influential in the spread of this style across Europe.
Its particular silhouette evokes the novels of Jane Austin and was recently reinterpreted in “Bridgerton Chronicles”.
It is the pinnacle of a neoclassical style, inspired by the Greco-Roman silhouette of antiquity.
The dress is straight and marked under the chest.
The Empire dress is made of a single piece that most often buttons in the front, or closes with hidden ribbons.
The sleeves, short, are often “balloon” and the low neckline is most often square.
The addition of a train reminiscent of that of the empress for her coronation, signals the rank of the wearer.
The materials
It is a very light but complex dress.
Linen or batiste, a very fine and very light linen fabric, was thus very popular for summer outfits for its lightness and whiteness before being supplanted by cotton.
The lingerie
The empire dress is worn over a light corset , short or long depending on the period.
This same corset is worn over an undershirt, with a square neckline and short sleeves.
Finally, to hide the corset, we add a petticoat held under the chest by straps.
